What is the Elephant Managers Association About?

The Elephant Managers Assocation is about elephants. Whether it's issues that surround elephants in zoos or the threats elephants face in the wild, the EMA is striving to conserve these magnificent animals. EMA members are elephant professionals from around the world - researchers, curators, veterinarians, and handlers - all working in concert with more than 25 member institutions to ensure elephants' survival. EMA members are also people who care about elephants - people who know how important elephants are, want to learn more about them, and wish to support the EMA's conservation efforts.

The EMA is about education. If you've ever touched an elephant, then you've likely touched the EMA. If you've seen an elephant demonstration or performance - in a zoo, circus or a movie - then you probably watched the EMA in action. In these ways, and many others, the EMA brings people and elephants closer together for the benefit of both. You can get closer to elephants as an EMA member. The Journal of the Elephant Managers Association (JEMA), the flagship publication of the EMA, brings you elephant articles and photos from around the country, and around the world. First-hand accounts of ongoing research - from the researchers themselves - in-depth interviews with elephant professionals, virtual tours of the world's elephant facilities, and news from the wild are all regular JEMA features. And don't forget the birth announcements and baby pictures! If it happens in the elephant world, it's covered in JEMA. In between issues of JEMA, you'll receive Gray Matters, the EMA's bi-monthly newsletter. Gray Matters features breaking news, job announcements and EMA updates.

The EMA is about conservation.A world without elephants isn't much of a world. From the plains of Africa to a university in Oregon, from the jungles of Asia to your local zoo, EMA members are making a world of difference in caring for and conserving elephants. What we learn from wild elephants is vital to captive elephants' health and well-being; what we learn from captive elephants is crucial to their survival in the wild. With your help the EMA can continue to make progress in elephant conservation.

The EMA is about you.Elephants are at a crossroads; the paths are not clearly marked. Instead of waiting to see what happens next to elephants, let's make something happen. Together.
